Our Past Comdev – ROTATION
March 5, 2020Brazil
April 8, 2020Empowering medical students, improving nation’s health as our fundamental goals always encouraged us as medical students to implement our 3rd United Nations SDG’s: Good health and well-being. Sustaining Good health and well being seems uneasy to deal with, but as medical students, we have the right to improve our definition of health, right?
As CIMSA Community development society, we believed that improving global health could be achieved by educating the society to improve the community’s quality of life. Speaking about Global Health, Quality of Indonesia’s health needs acknowledgment improvement, either for the children or the parents. The fact that these days, narcotics miss-use and cigarette use increased rapidly among the Indonesian teenagers, which could ruin their future.
Hibernasi (Hidup Bersih dan Sehat Bersama CIMSA) is our program that already begins since 2018, focuses on promoting a healthy and clean lifestyle to improve community health. Yayasan Hamba is our underdeveloped community. Yayasan Hamba facilitates the less fortunate children that “unwanted from their family” to receive the same affection as the other children, therefore we would like to prevent these kids from the “pergaulan bebas” by educate the caregivers and also acknowledge the children about the danger of narcotics miss-use and cigarette use.
In 2020, our 3rd intervention held on 5th March. In the previous intervention, we already discussed the cleanliness and self-hygiene, and in our 3rd intervention, we discussed about the danger of narcotics miss-use and cigarette use. In this intervention, we focused more on educating the caregivers by presenting 2 speakers. Our 1st speaker is Eko Prasetyo (ex narcotics addict) that owned their own rehabilitation. He’s actively motivated and spreading positiveness to stay away from drug and cigarettes use, he also openly sharing his own experience in dealing with drugs. And our 2nd speaker is Rania Aisyah Herima “Duta Anti-Narkoba” Raja Bandar representative.
Not only educating the caregivers, but we also try our best to bound with the caregivers. We do bounding by playing games “Berpacu dalam Melodi”. The caregivers must guess the 80-00’s songs played on the speakers, the caregivers felt excited and actively guessing the song. Furthermore, the caregiver’s enthusiasm toward the material given reflected during the session. They both considered as good listeners and active participants. The session becomes more alive because the caregivers have high interest and curiosity towards the issue, and in the last session (Asking Answering Session) the caregivers asked several questions to the speakers.
To measure the effectiveness of this intervention we did pre and post-test, the pretest and post-test showed that there’s improvement in caregiver’s knowledge toward narcotics and cigarettes. To evaluate this intervention we used questioner after the intervention were done. Questioner intended to the caregivers to know how important the intervention for them and also to understand what remain lacks, what and how to improve on the next intervention.
