What comes to your mind when someone says peace?
Get lost in the lyrics while listening to a song? Stay updated to the latest episode of a Korean drama? Or a classic pose you pick in every photo session?
According to Merriam-Webster, peace can be defined as a harmony in personal relation or an agreement to end hostilities between 2 groups who have been at war. Everyone may define peace differently depending on their past experience and influence of their life.
Each year the world celebrates the International Day of Peace on 21 September. Since 1981, The United Nations General Assembly has established the third Tuesday as the International Day of peace before designated a day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire two decades later.
The expectation of peace has always been changing in every generation. Today, we are much less likely to die in war compared to our parents or grandparents. Are you sure? Well, if you do, then good for you. The establishment of the United Nations, the creation of a charter, and the obligation of governments to control their force are seemingly beneficial. However, some of our friends in different countries may disagree.
In 2021, we are a year and a half into the COVID-19 Pandemic. Not gonna lie, the ecology and social problems are rising. The pandemic has been accompanied by a surge in stigma and discrimination which only cost more lives instead of saving them. The unprivileged and marginalized groups are getting hit the hardest. Therefore, promoting a culture of peace is important, including,
- Seek to understanding
- Promote economic and social stability
- Respect all human rights
- Advocate for equality
As we envision our life after the pandemic, it might be impossible to get a normal life just like before the pandemic. However, it is totally possible for us to recover better and come back stronger. What are you waiting for? Look around, embrace what you can do, and take action because peace starts with you!
Happy International Day of Peace!
