As the rate of harassment and sexually transmitted diseases becoming expeditious in Indonesia, comprehensive education from an early age can be the solution to the root of the problem. Based on data taken from the Sleman district health profile in 2018, reported through the HIV AIDS Information System (SIHA), the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) was found as many as 131.279 cases.
The suppression of the number of sexually transmitted diseases through community development programs can be achieved by implementing the role of a peer educator with the peer education continuum system. This is the basis for SCORA CIMSA UGM to establish SECATEEN (Sexual Education for Teen) which provides peer educators to bring forth comprehensive sexual education for students of SMPN 4 Ngaglik.
SECATEEN aims to increase the knowledge of second graders of SMP Negeri 4 Ngaglik regarding HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. With those as the basis, we hope it’ll help them to avoid activities and behaviors that can cause HIV/AIDS and or nearing gender-based violence practice.
SECATEEN carried out the intervention for two days. On the first day, SECATEEN OCs visited the school to hold a bonding event in order to strengthen the relationship between the Organizing Committees and the students. The activities consisted of two-way introductions, games, and a recall session of previous intervention materials. The next day’s event was held online where male and female participants were separated. The intervention started and ended with pre-test and post-test. OCs presented materials on HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence based on the knowledge gained in pre-project training with Rifka Annisa Wcc. The presentation continued with a gender-based violence movie screening, interactive QnA session, roleplay, selection of Dokter Kecil, and awarding session. The selection of Dokter Kecil aims to empower students of SMPN 4 Ngaglik to become peer educators and role models for their friends. The follow-up methods of SECATEEN were in the form of a before-after video of students’ knowledge about the materials and a poster competition.
This event increased participants’ understanding and awareness regarding HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. the knowledge that has been obtained will be implemented in the attitudes and actions of participants in society. Hopefully, this event can bring sustainable benefits for all parties involved.
