What A Waste 2nd Intervention

What a Waste! (WAW) is a collaborative project initiated by the Community Development Society and SCORP CIMSA UGM to address waste management issues and enhance the community’s knowledge of sustainable waste practices in the Margodadi sub-district. Previously, WAW had already intervened with PKK Kelurahan Margodadi about waste sorting and the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle. On 29th September 2024, we came back to Kelurahan Margodadi with a new topic, “The Global Challenges of Food Waste: What Can We Do?”

Pre-Project Training was held on September 13th, 2024. Pre-Project Training was held for all WAW OCs with Almira Salsabila Ghassani Asmara as our Human Rights Trainer (HRT). The activities include pre-test, training, post-test, games, and a workshop on Eco-Enzyme and recycling paper. This training aimed to equip OCs with knowledge about waste management and to help OCs guide participants of the upcoming main event in the making of Eco-Enzyme. In this training, all of the OCs tried to recycle paper from scrap paper.

The target of our intervention is the members of the PKK Kelurahan Margodadi Community. We started the day by doing exercises with the PKK Community members. For this intervention, we invited Eco-Enzyme Nusantara Sleman, a group of volunteers focusing on waste management, specifically in making Eco-Enzyme, a liquid product made from food waste fermentation. Volunteers from Eco-Enzyme Nusantara Sleman, led by Bu Kiky, did a seminar on food waste management and how to make Eco-Enzyme from food waste. All of the participants were interested in the topic. For them, it was relatable to their daily lives.

Besides that, we also conducted two practical workshops in small groups led by OCs and volunteers from Eco-Enzyme Nusantara. The workshops consist of a workshop on making Eco-Enzyme and a workshop on making soap from cooking oil waste. All the participants participated successfully both workshops. We also did a mini-game to liven our participant’s enthusiasm in between workshops. Our participants felt excited about this intervention and couldn’t wait for the next intervention. After the main intervention, we also conducted a follow-up activity to refresh the participants’ memory. We asked them to share their experience of the main intervention on social media. We believe this intervention will increase the participant’s awareness of waste management and create a better world by reducing waste.
