Benjamin Franklin once said “An ounch of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Prevention of disease now has been our focus to reduce burden of disease and economic burden in countries all over the globe. Globally, scientist observed the shifting of disease burden from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases. On the other hand, Indonesia still find its way to erradicate tuberculosis, famous example of communicable disease.
ATTENTION is a sustainable project that aims to provide TB prevention and education, this sustainable project is based on the high prevalence of tuberculosis in Indonesia, as well as in Yogyakarta. Based on the Indonesia TB situation update, the total TB cases in Indonesia taken from all forms in 2016 were 360,565 cases, making Indonesia ranked second in the world’s largest TB cases, nec. According to Indonesia TB situation update, in Indonesia, the total cases for TB in 2016 is 360.565 cases and the cure rate for ACF-positive is still 85% for patient registered in 2015. Based on Yogyakarta Public health office, Yogyakarta has 944 TB case in 2017, especially in 3 sub-district; Jetis, Umbulharjo, and Matrijeron. These data are the background for us to initiate a sustainable project that aim to reduce TB burden in Indonesia through prevention and education for Junior High Student, in which they will contribute as peer and family educator.
In order to achieve ATTENTION’s objectives, here are some of our concrete action that makes up ATTENTION. The first one is by creating a cadre, both adult and teen cadre. We believe that peer-educator is one of the best method for JHS student to learn and adult cadre will help us to teach and guide these children when we are not available. We also use story telling, scenario, and games as a method to deliver the lessons. Beside that, we also want to intiate an annual competition, such as poster, pageant, article, and other competition that can help to empower them as agent for tuberculosis prevention. We empower those junior high students to create a small organization in their school, in which this organisation will continue our mission to prevent tuberculosis and reduce its burden, both health and economical burden. Furthermore, we will do a ground and air campaign together with junior high school student, in which this campaig targets local community around their school and students. We create ATTENTION with hope to create a sustainable impact. In this definition, sustainable means that this project will continue in this school from generation to generation even without our intervention. Moreover, after this small organization become stable in Stella Duce 2, we will help them to expand their impact by initiating this project in other community, with them ad the subject of the project and us as the supervisor. We hope that this small organization can be sustainable and broaden its impact.

Around 15-20% of the world population are persons with disabilities and they have 2-4 times higher disaster mortality rates compared to those without disabilities. They may be placed at increased disaster risk because of their cognitive or physical impairments, which resulting in the limitation to access information and to act on that information. SCORP CIMSA UGM saw these facts as a concerning matter. Yogyakarta, along with the beauty of its nature, also carries disaster risk such as earthquake, volcanic eruption, storm, and landslide. SLB B Karnnamanohara is a special school for children with hearing impaired children that is located in Yogyakarta. The lack of disaster risk reduction education and proper evacuation system encouraged us to improve the disaster management for the children there through community development DIAMOND.
DIAMOND has done several activities such as two bonding activities between member and the community target, primary assessment at SLB B Karnnamanohara—in which we decided the focuses of our community development— and also the first and second intervention.
DIAMOND’s first intervention focuses on the pre-disaster preparedness, earthquake, and volcanic eruption while the second intervention focuses on fire, storm and flood disaster preparedness. Before the intervention, SCORP members had pre-project training about emergency preparedness for children with disabilities from ASB’s training coordinator and training officer, Mbak Rani and Mbak Nisa. In order to achieve our goals, we have done several activites using different methods to deliver the materials. There was mini games called ‘TAS SIAGA’ where the children were asked to categorize things based on its importance during disaster. Then, we had storytelling using illustration pictures. During the storytelling, we were also demonstrating several actions that should be taken during the preparation or the disaster itself. The other games that we played was Kartu Benar Salah. For each scenario, there are two pictures describing the wrong action and the correct action that should be taken related to disaster. Not only using cards, we also used a large tablet to show different images and illustration. This was done to help SCORP members who have difficulty describing an event or object to the children. Not only it helps members in explaining, the utilization of a tablet is very helpful for SLB students in understanding the material presented.
Every activities are ended with disaster simulation which we use to review and observe whether the students truly understand what to do when disaster happens or not. Aside from the fun and warmth we had with the kids at SLB B Karnnamanohara, we are contented that by far, the main focus of our intervention can be delivered to the children. The students managed to understand the materials given during the intervention, proved by a 70% increase of post-test result, and 100% of the students managed to apply it during the mini simulation. SCORP CIMSA UGM hopes that we can continue to improve the children’s knowledge about disaster and spread awareness about inclusivity in disaster risk reduction to broader society through this community development.

Hippocrates once said “The greatest medicine of all is to teach people how not to need it”. Prevention of disease now has been our focus to reduce burden of disease and economic burden in countries all over the globe. It is believed that the most effective way to prevent a vast array of disease is by implementing clean and healthy lifestyle. According to Donald Novey, a doctor in Park Ridge Advocate Medical Group, implementing clean and healthy lifesyle also boost your confidence and keep your mental health in check.
Yayasan HAMBA is our-community of choice. Yayasan HAMBA is a orphanage located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Yayasan HAMBA provide home and shelter for marginalized and abandoned children all over Java island. They also helps children with mental retardation and children from unwanted pregnancy. Member of this community comes from different background and age, from infant to elderly, from bataknesse to javanesse, but they gather together with one mission, to serve those children whose been rejected from their family and society.
By using questionnaire-based interview and checklist-based observation in, Yayasan HAMBA, our research supporting division and Yayasan HAMBA reach a conclusion that the community has a complex problems pivoting around one main problem, lack of self-hygiene and unhealthy lifestyle. Along with the community, we decided to create a community development that focus on these issues and implementing government’s guideline in our developing process. We then named it HIBERNATION ( Healthy and Clean Lifestyle Promotion for Disease Prevention).
We held our first intervention, on 7 April 2019, We start the intervention by doing pysical activity together, then we seperated the community into classes based on their chronological and mental age. The focus of this first intevention is self-hygiene and prevention of communicable diseases. We deliver the lessons using several methods, such as FGD, house cleaning competiiton, talkshow, quiz, discussion and practice session.
On Sunday, 8 September 2019, CIMSA UGM held second intervention for HIBERNATION . The second intervention focus on healthy nutrition and stunting, which is second most-concerned issue in Yayasan HAMBA, according to caregivers. As usual we start the intervention by doing some physical activities. After that we deliver the lessons using FGD, Talkshowm quiz, discussion, Cooking demo, and totebag competition. The speaker is a nutritionist from Faculty of Medicine UGM.The next intevention will be held on 4th April 2020, We will then focus on tobacco and drug use in teenager. We hope that this intervention will be as or even more successful that previous one.
On Friday, 29th January 2021, HIBERNATION CIMSA UGM held its 1st mini intervention at Yayasan HAMBA. Our 1st mini intervention raises a topic about PrimaKu application.
On Friday, 4th December 2020, HIBERNASI CIMSA UGM held its 4th intervention at Yayasan Hamba. Our 4th intervention raises a topic about the danger of cigarettes
Empowering medical students, improving nation’s health as our fundamental goals always encouraged us as medical students to implement our 3rd United Nations SDG’s: Good health and
According to WHO, 52 million children under 5 years of age are wasted, 17 million are severely wasted and 155 million are stunted, while 41 million are overweight or obese. Around 45% of deaths among children under 5 years of age are linked to undernutrition which mostly occur in low-and middle income countries. At the same time, rates of childhood overweight and obesity are rising. Malnutrition in children is the problem that we all must conquer together since children are the generation that we all should protect.
Meanwhile in Indonesia, close to 3 in 10 children under 5 years of age were stunted while 1 in 10 were wasted (2018). There are several factors that may contribute to Indonesian children malnutrition, such as poverty, maternal health and also changing in diets and lifestyle. In DIY, Sleman ranked 4th for underweight and wasting than other kabupaten (7,33%) where Puskesmas Gamping II ranked 5th for highest rate of malnutrition children than other puskesmas in Sleman.
SCOPH CIMSA UGM plans to execute a change for Sleman children with malnutrition by initiating a community development (COMDEV) KENYANG (Keseimbangan Gizi Anak Tersayang that sustainable for 2 years in TK ABA Dukuh 2 Somodaran, Gamping, Sleman. The GOALS for KENYANG (Nutrition Balance for your beloved children) is to increase awareness and knowledge of parents in TK ABA Dukuh 2 Somodaran about the criteria of balanced nutrition for children <5 years old, while learning to improve and maintain health and development of their children for about 80% that measured by post-test after education about nutrition is given, and also giving education, medical check-up and various other activities that relates with nutrition in children for 2 years.
Before we starts our intervention, we asses the initial antropometry measurement for children as our initial data, other than that we spread questionnaire consist of question related to cildren growth, stunting, and nutrition. After that, we open a group discussion for moms to create a grand design for KENYANG. Those moms give a lot of input and activities innovation that help us in creating fun yet educational intervention.
To Increase the relationship between members SCOPH CIMSA UGM and children in TK ABA Dukuh 2 Somodaran. In every bonding, we always do antropometry measurement including (height, weight, head circumference, chest circumference, arm circumference, and arm length). We make recapitulated the data of every antropometry measurement in microsoft excel. We also held pre project trainings to give members of SCOPH CIMSA UGM knowledge and awareness about malnutrition for children under 5 years old especially about wasting and stunting. It’s hoped that with this training, members could educate the cadres of KENYANG when intervention day. Other than that, we also teach SCOPH member about antropometry measurement and how to give education about stunting and nutrition for children.
The intevention of KENYANG will be held on February 2020. The method of intervention should be capable to understand by parents of TK ABA Dukuh 2 Somodaran and should be interesting enough so the community will have fun while learning throughout the process. Education will be given to the community during intervention either by members of SCOPH CIMSA UGM or doctors from IDAI Yogyakarta that will discussed about malnutrition in children under 5 years old. Then, to encourage the parents to give their children healthy lifestyle since they were 5, we are also going to give cooking demo and how to prepare healthy meals for their children.
Based on research, HIV / AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) is one of the diseases with high urgency in Indonesia, including Yogyakarta. Lack of understanding, knowledge, and awareness of the surrounding community about the prevention, treatment and transmission of HIV / AIDS and STIs are the main causes of the high number of HIV / AIDS and STI cases in Yogyakarta.
Therefore, SCORA CIMSA UGM initiated a SECATEEN comdev targeting junior high school students, aims to facilitate them in getting sexual education so that they will understand about sexual education and avoid sexual behaviors that can cause sexual diseases. SECATEEN has several types of activities, consist of assessment, bonding, and several interventions. For now, we are preparing to reassess due to the long period of time. After that we will carry out bonding and intervention.
Each intervention will begin and end with a pre-test and post-test. The intervention will be filled with material given by PETRA, interactive games which will be guided by SCORA members, as well as pre-test and post-test. The material which will be delivered during intervention, refers to the guideline from UNAIDS entitled International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education which has been grouped based on the needs of each age. Submission of material will be packaged in the form of case studies with story telling methods, so that cadres will be encouraged to increase their curiosity so that the learning process will be more interesting and effective. In addition, pre-project training will be conducted for SCORA members and SECATEEN Organizing Committee by PETRA and speakers from UNALA
Indonesia is one of the developing countries that contributes to the increase of children under five. Despite the large number of children under five, documentation of diarrhea and monitoring of data related to diarrhea is still poor. Appropriate procedures for accurately diagnosing using molecular technology are almost impossible to be applied in Indonesia as routine checks.
Therefore, the community development team of CIMSA UGM created a community development ROTATION called aimed at increasing the awareness of Cokrokusuman Village community and establishing an independent community in all walks of life (teachers, parents, health cadres, youth , etc.) in the prevention and management of diarrhea by 75% within 3 years.
