The discovery of Rotavirus is able to change the paradigm of experts on the common causes of diarrhea so far. However, the information has not been delivered to the primary health care, there is no proper information for primary health care because doctors and patients still consider the main cause of diarrhea is bacteria.
In addition, Indonesia is one of the developing countries that contributes to the increase of children under five. Despite the large number of children under five, documentation of diarrhea and monitoring of data related to diarrhea is still poor. Appropriate procedures for accurately diagnosing Rotavirus using molecular technology are almost impossible to be applied in Indonesia as routine checks.
Diarrhea is often regarded as a trivial disease and not a priority in Indonesia because of the assumption that the disease is commonly experienced by children under five. This situation is dangerous because lack of knowledge about proper handling of diarrhea can increase the morbidity of this disease due to dehydration that is not monitored by the parents and the health service so that cause fatal consequences. In Yogyakarta, diarrhea is the second highest infectious disease after influenza and is ranked first as an infectious disease that causes patients to require hospital treatment. Based on these facts, it is unfortunate that people still often underestimate and rule out diarrhea.
Based on the data exposure and problem identification, it turns out that diarrhea which generally affects small children requires more attention because of the lack of knowledge from the wider community about the causes, dangers, and management of the disease. Therefore, the community development team of CIMSA UGM created a community development called ROTATION (Rotavirus Promotion and Prevention) aimed at increasing the awareness of Cokrokusuman Village community and establishing an independent community in all walks of life (teachers, parents, health cadres, youth , etc.) in the prevention and management of diarrhea by 75% within 3 years.
Target groups from this activity is the community at RW 08, Cokrokusuman Village, Yogyakarta City. While the indicator of success want to be achieved are the 75% of the community of RT 37 RW 08 Cokrokusuman Village understand how to give the first handling of diarrhea, formation of health cadres that can educate the community target about the first handling of diarrhea in RW 08 Cokrokusuman village, all mothers under five, members of Posyandu RW 08 (20 people) understand how to give first handling of diarrhea and balanced nutrition, and also to increase knowledge of primary health care at Jetis Public Health Center (Puskesmas Jetis) by 75% regarding Rotavirus and diarrheal management are caused by virus.
Intervention conducted to achieve the objectives above are; by training of health cadres by the member of community development team CIMSA UGM, giving educational games related to diarrhea to community target, community education about the causes, dangers, prevention and initial handling of diarrhea, and also give the target community healthy calendar that contains information, interesting facts about health, oralite-making dosage, handling on seizures and dehydration and also Javanese calendar system.
Resources we have in this community development are representatives of member PKK as the health cadres (totaling 20 people) and Puskesmas Jetis where the routine posyandu activity is usually conducted, used for place to CIMSA giving education
Evaluation is conducted after the intervention was done by meeting with health cadres in the routine posyandu activities and regular meeting of PKK to discuss about the development of community target after intervention was done. ROTATION ever had a collaboration with Pediatric Research Office RSUP Dr. Sardjito (Professor Yati Soenarto) for training on diarrhea caused by rotavirus to the community development team member. We also ever had a collaboration with 2 lecturers of FKKMK UGM; dr. Arta Fatmawati, Ph.D. and Mrs. Aviria Ermamilia, S.Gz, M.Gizi, RD; for giving education related to diarrhea in our third intervention of community development ROTATION
